Tripura University Agartala has come a long way in its quest for excellence as a higher educational institution in the small state of Tripura: from humble beginnings at the Calcutta University Post-Graduate Wing in 1976 to a state university in 1987, and finally a Central University in 2007.  The goal of this university is to " disseminate and advance knowledge via instructional and research facilities." To achieve this goal, the university established the Directorate of Distance Education in 1996. The university is dedicated to developing and empowering the people of this state and area by delivering great education and technological improvements in academic and research activities. 

Being a traditional university, Tripura University has taken on preserving and promoting the state's remarkable legacy of indigenous art forms, folk, oral, and multi-dimensional cultural traditions. Tripura University now has two colleges, 44 departments, four study centres, and four departments under the Directorate of Distance Education. The Directorate of Distance Education provides educational assistance to employed and socioeconomically disadvantaged people in the state's remote highland districts.
